Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. The program teaches life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. The 10 week long program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.
Gannett Grant provides scholarships
This year, using JLMC and grant funds we successfully applied for, 15 middle school aged girls from Barack Obama Middle School were able to successfully participate in the Girls on the Run Program in Asbury Park. They were coached by our own JL members.Additionally all participants in this underserved area were given appropriate running shoes.
Girls on the Run Collaboration:
Since partnering to establish a branch in Monmouth County over 350 girls have successfully completed a Fall &/or Spring Session in our county, many of which were able to participate due to scholarships provided by the JLMC.Further, the JLMC has provided coaches and hosted coaches’ trainings for the past two years. To date over 60 coaches have been trained. Two additional coaches trainings are planned for this Spring (February and March).
This spring the JLMC will sponsor 20 girls at the Red Bank Middle School for Girls on the Run.An additional 10 girls in grades 6-8 grade will benefit in Red Bank as we underwrite their participation in the GOT (Girls on Track) program.
