State Public Affairs Committee (SPAC)

The State Public Affairs Commmittee (SPAC) of the New Jersey Junior Leagues (www.jlnjspac.org) is a statewide, non-partisan committee which advocates on behalf of the more than 3,000 Junior League members in New Jersey.  Representatives from each of the eight Leagues in New Jersey join together on SPAC to take action on select state and national public issues.  SPAC pursues initiatives and legislation to improve the quality of life for women and children; improve the quality of education; and improve the environment.  The Committee meets monthly.

Recent efforts have included supporting legislation requiring additional measures to protect women and children from domestic violence, trafficking and sex offenses.  SPAC is also working to improve implementation of the 2007 Cord Blood legilsation requiring health care practitioners to inform pregnant patients about life-saving donations to the NJ Cord Blood Bank.  Additional focus has been on childhood obesity through support of legislation to study the impact of recess and the lack thereof in NJ schools as well as support of the Association of Junior Leagues International's program, Kids iin the Kitchen.

NJ SPAC delegates participate in the annual "Walk to Washington", an event sponsored by the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce which provides an opportunity for SPAC members to meet directly with New Jersey's political representatives and business leaders both on the train ride to Washington, D.C. as well as in the nation's capital once they have arrived.

The JLMC SPAC continues to partner with a number of women's organizations, including the League of Women Voters, to sponsor the annual "Running & Winning" workshop. This is a one-day session developed to encourage high school girls to become involved in our political process and to make a difference.  The young students are brought together with elected female officials from the county.
